A new Lidl offer could suddenly make that possible.

Many homes come with nothing more than a narrow balcony or a tiny strip of garden. Usually, the space is taken up by a clothes airer, perhaps with a planter alongside it - and little else. Lidl’s compact bistro set now aims to turn even these miniature areas into a proper outdoor spot.

What Lidl is bringing to stores from 19 March

Lidl is launching the Livarno Bistro Set, a traditional three-piece arrangement comprising a round table and two folding metal chairs. It costs £54.99 (roughly €65, depending on the exchange rate) and goes on sale in stores from 19 March.

Every piece is made from dark-grey powder-coated metal. The table is circular, while both chairs and the table itself fold down flat. That matters for tenants with balconies or anyone with a very small urban garden: within seconds, the set can be tucked against a wall or into a corner.

The Livarno Bistro Set includes a table and two folding chairs made from weather-resistant metal, folds flat and comes with a three-year guarantee.

For anyone keen to avoid making a claim, Lidl provides a three-year manufacturer’s guarantee with the set. The items are supplied unassembled, with fitting instructions included in the box.

Livarno Bistro Set dimensions, weight limits and materials at a glance

To check quickly whether the set will fit on a particular balcony, it is worth looking at the figures.

  • Table: 57 cm diameter, 70.5 cm high
  • Chair: 45 cm wide, 41 cm deep, 80.5 cm high
  • Table load capacity: up to 25 kg
  • Chair load capacity: up to 110 kg per chair
  • Material: powder-coated metal, dark grey
  • Guarantee: 3 years

The tabletop provides enough room for two plates, glasses and a small carafe. It is not intended for a family barbecue, but it is sufficient for breakfast for two or a laptop and a mug of coffee.

Why a bistro set works so well in small outdoor spaces

Many people go wrong with balcony furniture because they try to fit standard patio pieces into the space: a sofa, a large table and two loungers. On a typical city balcony, that simply does not work. A bistro set takes a different route, with a small footprint and a clear purpose.

Where the set is particularly useful

Typical places to use it include:

  • narrow city balconies
  • small courtyards or back gardens
  • side passages beside the house
  • patios with limited depth

This is exactly where the folding design comes into its own. Families with children can quickly move the set aside during the day, leaving room for a paddling pool or ball games. Afterwards, it can be unfolded again to create a spot for coffee, homework or an evening glass of wine.

A designated place to sit can change how a garden is used more than many people realise - even if that space measures just two square metres.

Having an established outdoor seating area encourages people to spend more time outside. The barrier becomes much lower: rather than merely stepping out for some fresh air, you sit down, put away your phone and enjoy your coffee properly. That small change to the daily routine creates genuine breaks.

Everyday benefits of powder coating

At a price below €100, powder-coated metal is a sensible material choice. The coating forms a durable layer around the metal and offers better rust protection than ordinary paint.

Less maintenance, greater durability

Common advantages of powder coating include:

  • strong resistance to rain and damp conditions
  • very little upkeep required - a damp cloth will normally do
  • no oiling or staining work, as would be needed with wood
  • colour fades far more slowly than with cheap paint

Balcony owners without a storage room rarely have space for large protective covers. A set that can simply remain outdoors saves hassle. The dark finish also makes rain spots and pollen less noticeable than a bright white surface.

One easily overlooked feature is that the furniture feet are designed to protect flooring. Balcony tiles, wooden decking and delicate patio surfaces are less likely to be scratched. For rented homes, that could save money when moving out.

Value for money: how does Lidl compare with other retailers?

A look at mainstream online shops suggests that similar metal bistro sets with a folding function and powder coating often start at a noticeably higher price. Depending on the retailer, they can quickly cost €80 to €120 - sometimes without an extended guarantee.

Feature Lidl Livarno Set Typical competing product
Items in the set 1 table + 2 chairs 1 table + 2 chairs
Material powder-coated metal powder-coated metal or plastic
Price range approx. £54.99 approx. €80–120
Guarantee 3 years often 1–2 years
Foldable table and chairs fold with some, only the chairs fold

For anyone with only a small outdoor area who does not want to invest immediately in a complete lounge set, Lidl’s offer provides a comparatively affordable starting point.

Making the most of a small set

At first glance, a bistro set may suggest nothing more than “breakfast on the balcony”. In day-to-day use, however, it can serve far more purposes.

Everyday ideas

  • Morning: coffee and bread rolls outdoors, with a laptop for the first round of emails
  • Midday: a fresh-air break from working at home, while children do homework outside
  • Afternoon: a place for children to paint or do crafts without taking over the indoor dining table
  • Evening: a glass of wine, a book or summer streaming on a tablet

Its compact size also makes the table useful as an extra surface beside a barbecue. When guests arrive, it can be moved closer to the grill at short notice to hold plates or salads.

Questions buyers should consider before purchasing

Before putting the set into the trolley in store, it is worth carrying out a quick reality check.

  • Is there enough room? Measure the balcony’s width and depth, then compare them with the stated dimensions.
  • How will the set be stored? Is there a wall against which the folded table and chairs can be placed?
  • How many people need to sit there regularly? For more than two people, the set is more of an addition than a main solution.
  • How exposed is the location to wind and rain? On particularly windy roof balconies, the set may need weighting down or securing in stormy weather.

On very narrow balconies, it may help to position the table at a slight angle. This keeps a route to the door clear without making the seating area feel cramped.

Why small outdoor areas deserve more attention

Many city dwellers underestimate how much quality of life a small, well-used outdoor space can offer. A single piece of furniture can determine whether a balcony becomes a storage area or a mini oasis.

Those who design the space thoughtfully benefit from brief moments away from routine: morning sunshine, fresh air while reading, or a quick change of scene during home working. A bistro set is a practical part of that because it takes up little room while fulfilling a real function - somewhere to sit, put things down and unwind.

The effect is even more noticeable in densely built-up cities, where green spaces are scarce. A small table with two chairs on a balcony does not replace a park, but it creates a private outdoor place of one’s own. That is precisely what Lidl’s new offer is targeting - compact, affordable and, above all, suitable for everyday use.
